Already from an early age Gemma van der Zee has been occupied with drawing and painting. It was immediately obvious that she had inherited her talent from her father and grandfather. For that reason her choice for the “Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten” (Royal Academy of Art) in The Hague, was hardly surprising. From that time on painting remained her true and only passion.
After having lived for a short period of time in Laren (in the province of Noord-Holland), Gemma moved with husband and children to Brazil, where she would stay for a few years. She took courses in drawing and illustration. Once returned to the Netherlands her artistic development evolved further as she joined the “Gooische Academie”, eventually choosing for portrait painting. She works predominantly with acryl on canvas. Besides painting the portraits of well-known personalities from the world of opera, she also likes to portray on request.
